This Windflower Fairie was spotted in the emerging geranium by the entrance to the shoppe!

While human-folk slumber,
The fairies espy
Stars without number
Sprinkling the sky.

The Winter's long sleeping,
Like night-time is done;
But day-stars are leaping
To welcome the sun.

Star-like they sprinkle
The wildwood with light;
Countless they twinkle -
The Windflowers white!

This has been a great Saturday at the farm.  Steve hosted a Growing & Cooking with Herbs class this morning & everyone had a wonderful time.
Posting the info & recipe about basil makes us yearn for fresh basil on just picked tomatoes.  The best way to eat both!
We can only hope there is no more snow........although we do live in Michigan!

Basil

Basil

Ocimum Basilicum

Annual

Basil will grow best in rich, moist, well-drained soil. It thrives in full sun. Basil is a heat-loving herb that will not tolerate cold or frost. Plant basil in your garden after all danger of frost is gone.

Best known for its use in tomato sauce or pesto, basil can also star in many other dishes. It has a rich, spicy, peppery flavor with a hint of mint or clove. Fresh leaves can be used cooked or raw. Crush or chop the leaves and add to soups and sauces or toss them whole into salads. Its assertive flavor is a perfect complement to mild vegetables like zucchini, summer squash, potatoes or cabbage. For a quick, easy accompaniment to grilled meat or fish, make a tight foil packet of sliced zucchini, tomatoes, onion and fresh basil leaves. Bake in a 350 oven for 20 minutes. Summer at its best!

50 Degrees!!!

Our greenhouses are heated & the plants are growing.  Melissa & Barb are actually wearing shorts out there!  We will be featuring  a different herb every week with growing tips and recipes.   If you have never used fresh herbs in your cooking, you don't know what you are missing.  The flavors are endless!

Even though it is still snowy & really cold outside, our heaters are on in the greenhouse.  Melissa & Barb are busy "digging in the dirt"!  They are planting hanging baskets & containers.  We'll be growing soon!
