Basil

Basil

Ocimum Basilicum

Annual

Basil will grow best in rich, moist, well-drained soil. It thrives in full sun. Basil is a heat-loving herb that will not tolerate cold or frost. Plant basil in your garden after all danger of frost is gone.

Best known for its use in tomato sauce or pesto, basil can also star in many other dishes. It has a rich, spicy, peppery flavor with a hint of mint or clove. Fresh leaves can be used cooked or raw. Crush or chop the leaves and add to soups and sauces or toss them whole into salads. Its assertive flavor is a perfect complement to mild vegetables like zucchini, summer squash, potatoes or cabbage. For a quick, easy accompaniment to grilled meat or fish, make a tight foil packet of sliced zucchini, tomatoes, onion and fresh basil leaves. Bake in a 350 oven for 20 minutes. Summer at its best!
